On November 30, 1999, the Security Council of the United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution authorizing the Secretary-General to take necessary steps to establish the United Nations Observer Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC). MONUC will be composed of 500 military observers with a mandate to help implement the Lusaka peace agreement, including monitoring of the ceasefire.
