Casks are typically designed to shield the environment from the dangerous radiation in two ways. First, shielding of gamma radiation requires large amounts of mass. Gamma rays are best absorbed by materials with a high atomic number and a high density, such as concrete, lead, and steel. Le choix du bitume comme matrice de conditionnement a été conduit par la prise en considération des nombreux avantages présentés par ce matériau : - excellente adhésivité à de multiples supports, - solubilité négligeable dans l’eau et imperméabilité, plasticité, élasticité, résistance aux chocs, - tenue à l’irradiation satisfaisante, - inertie chimique, - bonne tenue biologique, - matière première abondante, coûts modérés.
