The core of a nuclear reactor comprises a central fuel zone, in which a fissile material normally constituted by a [mix] of enriched uranium oxide and plutonium oxide. This fuel zone is completely surrounded by a covering of fertile material normally constituted by depleted uranium oxide. In practice, this structure is obtained by juxtaposing vertical assemblies having a hexagonal section. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself (also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. Les combustibles nucléaires sont l'objet de perfectionnements constants pour optimiser le fonctionnement du réacteur(capacité de puissance, souplesse de fonctionnement, fiabilité), le cycle du combustible(bonne utilisation de la matière fissile) et la sûreté de l'installation nucléaire(robustesse, confinement des produits de fission). Un choix judicieux du matériau des combustibles et de sa conception permet d’obtenir un bon comportement du combustible en réacteur, tout en maintenant à des valeurs raisonnables les gradients thermiques et la diffusion des produits de fission. Les combustibles nucléaires sont l'objet de perfectionnements constants pour optimiser le fonctionnement du réacteur(capacité de puissance, souplesse de fonctionnement, fiabilité), le cycle du combustible(bonne utilisation de la matière fissile) et la sûreté de l'installation nucléaire(robustesse, confinement des produits de fission). Un choix judicieux du matériau des combustibles et de sa conception permet d’obtenir un bon comportement du combustible en réacteur, tout en maintenant à des valeurs raisonnables les gradients thermiques et la diffusion des produits de fission. La caractéristique essentielle d’un réacteur surgénérateur est qu'il produit plus de combustible qu'il n’ en consomme grâce à l'absorption des neutrons excédentaires par un matériau qui, lui-même, se transformera en matériau fissile. Plusieurs types de réacteurs surgénérateurs sont techniquement réalisables. [...] Le système de surgénérateur sur lequel se sont concentrés les plus grands efforts de développement est le réacteur rapide à métal liquide(LMFBR). Pour obtenir le maximum de plutonium-239, la vitesse des neutrons provoquant la fission doit rester élevée, avec une énergie égale ou proche de leur énergie initiale. Tous les matériaux modérateurs qui pourraient ralentir les neutrons, comme l'eau, doivent être exclus du réacteur. On utilise le sodium liquide qui a de très bonnes propriétés de transfert thermique. Le sodium se liquéfie à environ 100 °C et n’ entre en ébullition qu'à partir de 900 °C. Ses principaux inconvénients sont sa grande réactivité chimique avec l'air et l'eau et son niveau élevé de radioactivité induite dans le réacteur. The analytical electron microscope (AEM) is based on a conventional 200 keV transmission electron microscope (TEM) which has been augmented to include the functions of a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and the scanning electron microscope (SEM). As an imaging tool, the AEM is capable of 0.3 nm spatial resolution in the TEM mode, 1 nm resolution in the STEM mode, and 3 nm resolution in the SEM mode. Elemental microanalysis is carried out by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) and electron energy loss spectrometry (EELS), which together provide sensitivity to all elements with atomic number > 2.
