La commutation à bord est une méthode [...] qui consiste à utiliser un seul répéteur à large bande par faisceau à desservir et une matrice de commutation cyclique [...] Celle-ci connecte tour à tour chaque faisceau de l'antenne de réception à chaque répéteur. Les stations émettent leurs informations sous forme de série de paquets cycliques, chaque paquet étant destiné à un faisceau particulier. La matrice de commutation aiguille chacun des paquets reçus vers le faisceau destinataire. À la réception, chaque station reçoit, regroupés en un multiplex temporel [dans le cas de l'AMRT], les paquets émis par les stations correspondantes situées dans les divers faisceaux.
