L’étude des contraintes internes par diffraction de neutrons se fait au LLB en étroite collaboration avec l’Université de Reims, l’INFM (Italie) et le KFK Karlsruhe (Allemagne). C’est un secteur qui fait l’objet d’une forte demande industrielle : en effet, c’est actuellement la seule technique non destructive de détermination du tenseur local de déformation dans une pièce massive, avec actuellement une résolution spatiale de l’ordre du mm3; dans le cas fréquent d’un comportement élastique, on peut alors déterminer le tenseur local des contraintes internes. La connaissance de ces contraintes est dans beaucoup d’applications industrielles particulièrement importantes pour les calculs de tenue en fatigue des pièces.
