DEF

A matrix all of whose entries are zero.

CONT

A null matrix is a matrix in which every element of the matrix equals 0. It can be of any dimension. Addition and subtraction of a null matrix leaves the original matrix unchanged, multiplication with a null matrix results in another null matrix.

OBS

A zero matrix is sometimes called a trivial matrix. A matrix which has at least one nonzero entry is called a nontrivial matrix or nonzero matrix. (It is not required that all entries be nonzero, just that at least one of them is nonzero!)

OBS

zero matrix: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

DEF

The ratio of the applied excitation force phasor to the resulting velocity phasor with all other connection points of the system free, i.e. having zero restraining forces. Free impedance is the arithmetic reciprocal of a single element of the mobility matrix.

OBS

Historically, often no distinction has been made between blocked impedance and free impedance. Caution should, therefore, be exercised in interpreting published data. While experimentally determined free impedances could be assembled into a matrix, this matrix would be quite different from the blocked impedance matrix, resulting from mathematical modelling of the structure and, therefore, would not conform to the requirements for using mechanical impedance in a overall theoretical analysis of the system.

DEF
