Le bois est un matériau complexe, tant du point de vue de sa structure interne que de son mode de fabrication. Ses caractéristiques rhéologiques sont fortement liées à son organisation cellulaire(angle des microfibrilles...). L'état de précontraintes du bois dans la grume est le résultat de l'histoire de la croissance de l'arbre(contraintes de support, contraintes de maturation). Ces précontraintes peuvent être à l'origine de nombreux problèmes lors de l'exploitation du matériau(fentes à l'abattage, déformation...).
