En français, l’on confond les termes «exprès» et «express». Ce sont des homonymes ayant des sens différents. Le premier a le sens de spécial, par porteur spécial; le deuxième signifie rapide, accéléré.

Exprès :[...] La notion de vitesse est exclue du concept de ce mot. L'envoi par exprès ne bénéficie pas d’un moyen de transport plus rapide que le reste du courrier. Ce n’ est qu'à l'arrivée au bureau de destination qu'il bénéficie d’un traitement particulier : il est confié à un porteur affecté spécialement à sa distribution immédiate, indépendamment des tournées des facteurs. C'est peut-être pour écarter les éternelles confusions qui existent sur le sens et la prononciation de ce mot que la France a adopté en 1971 la dénomination «par porteur spécial».
