Le terme, taïkonaute, est construit sur le nom chinois servant à désigner l'espace, «taïkong» ou le «grand vide», auquel vient se greffer dans plusieurs langues occidentales le suffixe déjà utilisé pour les visiteurs des astres et du cosmos. En chinois, le suffixe utilisé est celui de l'être humain : le taïkonaute est donc l'«homme du grand vide»(taïkongren). Cependant, les professionnels du programme spatial et les médias chinois lui préfèrent «yuhangyuan», un mot à consonance plus scientifique qui désigne littéralement un «navigateur de l'univers».
