A constant volume cycle of events used to explain the energy transformation that takes place in a reciprocating engine.

Alphonse Beau de Rochas, a French engineer (1815-1893), ... created the ideal thermodynamic cycle of the 4-stroke engine (1862). Its cycle was implemented by Nicolaus Otto. Hence, the French use "cycle de Beau Rochas" but "Otto cycle" is more commonly used, especially in North America.

Alphonse Beau de Rochas, [était un] ingénieur français(1815-1908). Il établit le cycle thermodynamique idéal des moteurs à explosion à quatre temps(1862) à allumage commandé. [...] Nicolaus Otto était un ingénieur allemand(1832-1891) qui industrialisa le premier moteur 4 temps suivant le principe de Beau de Rochas. Ce cycle théorique est la base du moteur 4 temps à allumage commandé dans lequel la combustion se produit à volume constant.

L’expérience se déroule en quatre phases successives : admission des gaz, compression du mélange gazeux, explosion, échappement des gaz brûlés.

Puisque ce cycle fut établi par le Français Alphonse Beau de Rochas, il porte en France, le nom de son inventeur. Toutefois, puisque l’Allemand Nikolaus Otto industrialisa le premier moteur fonctionnant selon ce principe, ce cycle s’appelle ailleurs et surtout en Amérique du Nord, «cycle d’Otto».
