Precoat pressure filters consist of one or more leaves, plates, or tubes upon which a coat of diatomaceous earth or other filter aid is deposited to form a filtering surface for clarification. ... The filtering elements may be screen-covered vertical rectangular leaves in a vertical cylindrical tank, screen-covered vertical circular leaves in a horizontal cylindrical tank, circular porous ceramic leaves, wire-wound cylindrical leaves, or hollow tubes of porous stone, porous carbon, wire cloth, or porous stainless-steel sheet. They may be fabric-covered.

Filtre à claies. Les claies sont constituées par des éléments de forme carrée, rectangulaire, ou circulaire. Elles baignent dans la solution à filtrer et sont placées dans un cylindre vertical ou horizontal en fonte, en chaudronné, ou encore en matière plastique.... On commence par "alluvionner" le tissu filtrant avec une couche d’adjuvant approprié qui devient ainsi le véritable milieu filtrant(precoat). Pendant la filtration, l'assemblage des éléments filtrants est fixe, mais pour assurer, en temps opportun, le décolmatage, l'arbre creux est entraîné par un moteur électrique : pendant la rotation, les sédiments accumulés sont projetés, par la force centrifuge, sur la paroi interne de l'enceinte cylindrique.
