3, record 10, French, - eau%20profonde%20de%20l%27Atlantique%20Nord

Squat refers to the increase of a ship's draught as a result of its motion through water. It is a hydraulic phenomenon whereby the water displaced creates an increase in current velocity past the moving hull causing a reduction in pressure resulting in a localised reduction of the water level and, consequently, in a settling of the vessel deeper in the water. For various reasons-having to do with hull design, trim and other physical and operational factors-squat may be different at the fore and aft. 2, record 18, English, - squat

Attitude Measurement Issues. Acoustic refraction and the vessel’s roll, pitch, heading and heave determine where the acoustic beams meet the sea floor. Float-type gauges are essentially water level gauges. A float in the gauge receptacle rises as rain water enters the chamber, the rise of the float being recorded by a pen on a suitably calibrated, clock-driven chart. Some float gauges can only record to the capacity of the chamber, but others are equipped with siphoning arrangements to let out the water when the chamber fills and to return the pen to the zero position on the chart. The most serious difficulty with such gauges is in their operation at temperatures below freezing. 4, record 76, English, - float%2Dtype%20gauge

The bucket pump is similar to the rag pump and lift disk pump but does not require a tube to draw the water up. It is not very common anymore, but can still be found occasionally. One advantage of this pump is that the buckets don't turn upright until they are well below the surface of the water. They fill with clean water, and bring up less of the scum that often floats on the surface of a well. Large old sailing ships sometimes used bucket pumps. They were also used on farms and many other places. Of course, the length of the chain and the number of buckets can vary greatly. 3, record 78, English, - bucket%20pump

Ecological regimes in a long-term perspective. Regimes did not only come into being to address interpersonal problems, but also to counter problems inherent in our relationship with the surrounding natural environment. ... In this section, I ... seek to show how that the concept of regime can successfully be used within the context of all of human history. In the first and longest stage of human development, people lived as gatherers and hunters. Their ecological regime, the ways they addressed ecological problems, was very much determined by the opportunities and limitations offered by the surrounding natural environment, by human nature, as well as by their skills. 3, record 81, English, - ecological%20regime

2, record 81, French, - r%C3%A9gime%20%C3%A9cologique

Unfortunately, the on/off status often is not an accurate indicator of whether groundwater is reaching the plant root zone, but the rise of water above the water table due to capillarity is detected easily by the monitoring. Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The surge-block is slowly lowered each time resistance begins to decrease. 2, record 83, English, - surge%20block

We investigate the coupling of river network structure and hydraulic geometry thereby relaxing the assumption of spatially invariant celerities and hydrodynamic dispersion coefficients. The presence of spatially varying celerities induces a dispersion effect, referred to as kinematic dispersion, on the network travel time distribution. Its contribution to the total dispersion is comparable to that due to the heterogeneity of path lengths, that is, geomorphologic dispersion, and significantly larger than the hydrodynamic dispersion. 1, record 85, English, - kinematic%20dispersion

With the absence of closed recycling loops in streams, one mechanism for controlling nutrient and energy losses via hydrologic transport is through regulation of outflow losses by stream biota. Nutrients and energy are released at one point in a stream become available as resources (i.e. stabilized inputs) at points further down the topographic gradient. Thus, resources are successfully "spiraled" down the stream rather than "recycled" in place. ... thus, it can be hypothesized that streams are "spiralling" or cascading systems in which the retention time and efficiency of resources utilization are maximized through control by specialized functional groups down the stream continuum. 3, record 97, English, - spiral

SPC: Self-Polishing Copolymer (SPC) antifoulings release biocides via a hydrolysis reaction of an acrylic polymer with seawater. This is a chemical reaction and only occurs at the surface of the coating. SPC technology combines controlled polishing rate and optimum biocide release with inherent self smoothing for hull roughness control and maximum fuel efficiency. Pioneered by International Paint in the early 1970s, the overall contribution of SPC technology to the fuel efficiency of the global fleet has been significant. 1, record 98, English, - self%2Dpolishing%20copolymer

1, record 98, French, - copolym%C3%A8re%20autopolissant
