L'orientation est généralement assurée par des moteursélectriques, par l'intermédiaire d’une couronne dentée. De nombreuses éoliennes comportent un système de blocage mécanique de la position de la nacelle suivant une orientation donnée : cela évite de solliciter constamment les moteurs et permet aussi de bloquer l'éolienne durant les opérations de maintenance.
