La méthode des microhabitats a été définie dans ses grands principes par Waters (1976), puis améliorée et informatisée par Bovec (1982), aux États-Unis, sous la dénomination de «Instream Flow Incremental Methodology» ou IFIM. La méthode IFIM permet de prédire la quantité d’habitat disponible d’une portion de cours d’eau en fonction de différents paramètres retraçant les conditions hydrodynamiques. Le module principal consiste en une «simulation physique de l’habitat» selon la dénomination anglo-saxonne : Physical HABitat SIMulation ou PHABSIM [...].
