These entities include the provinces, the territories and their administrative subdivisions (except those with the same spelling in both languages), major rivers flowing to the sea and bodies of water or geographical features (rivers, mountains, islands, straits) which have in common the characteristic of covering a large area, lying in more than one province or territory or extending beyond Canada's border.

The provincial park of this name has become a national park. The park contains shipwrecks. The expression "Fathom Five" is taken from "The Tempest" by William Shakespeare: "Full fathom five thy father lies, Of his bones are corals made." A "fathom" is a unit of measure six feet long used mainly in measuring water depth and the length of vessels, ropes, cables and so on (5 fathoms = 30 feet).
