Afin de prévoir les propriétés des quasi-cristaux [...] Shanjin He et J. D. Maynard de l'université de Pennsylvanie aux États-Unis [...] ont construit un instrument de musique pour simuler les mouvements des électrons à l'intérieur d’un quasi-cristal [.... ] Pour construire leur instrument de musique, ils ont dessiné [des dalles en losange d’un pavage de Penrose] sur une plaque d’aluminium très rigide. Au centre de chaque losange, ils ont collé avec de l'époxy un diapason dont le plan des branches est parallèle au petit axe du losange. Chaque diapason constitue un oscillateur avec une fréquence de résonance de 440 Hz, le «la» moyen de la gamme. Pour coupler mécaniquement les diapasons entre eux, ils ont relié chaque branche à sa voisine par un fil métallique soudé à leurs extrémités, ainsi chaque branche du diapason constitue un oscillateur qui est couplé à quatre oscillateurs voisins. Mais, du fait de la structure quasi-périodique, les distances entre un oscillateur central et ses quatre voisins sont égales respectivement à 3, 7, 7, 8 7, 26 et 7, 77. Le réseau d’oscillateurs couplés ainsi constitué est excité par un électro-aimant vibrant, alimenté par un courant alternatif dont la fréquence peut être modifiée de manière continue. Enfin, pour pouvoir enregistrer les sons produits par cet instrument d’un nouveau genre, ils ont utilisé quatre micros de guitare électrique, placés au hasard dans la structure. Pour jouer de l'instrument, on fait varier la fréquence du courant d’excitation de l'électro-aimant. On produit ainsi des sons dont l'intensité dépend de la fréquence d’excitation. Le spectre des fréquences est enregistré.
