On les utilise en différentes régions tropicales pour confectionner des nattes ou des ouvrages de vannerie. Les racines fournissent, par distillation à la vapeur, une huile essentielle aromatique à odeur forte et tenace, utilisée en parfumerie et en savonnerie. Très répandu sur la côte de Coromandel, à la Réunion, aux Antilles, aux Philippines, à Maurice, le vétiver est employé pour préserver les vêtements de laine et les fourrures des attaques des insectes.
