Hill-holder is a name for the mechanism invented by Studebaker that holds the brake until the clutch is at the friction point, making it easier to start up hills from a stop in manual transmission automobiles. 2, record 7, English, - hill%20holder

When a driver stops their vehicle on an incline where the nose of the car is sufficiently higher than the rear of the car, the system is engaged when the driver's foot is depressing the brake pedal, and then the clutch pedal is fully depressed. Once set, the driver must keep the clutch pedal fully depressed, however, they may remove their foot from the brake pedal. To disengage the system and move the car forward, the driver selects first gear, feathers (applies) the gas pedal, and slowly releases the clutch pedal, which, at a point in its travel, releases the braking system allowing the car to proceed. 2, record 7, English, - hill%20holder

Because we are more accustomed to recognizing and accepting objects with equally distributed parts on a vertical axis, we identify this visual satisfaction as balance. When both sides of an axis are mirror images of each other, they are in symmetry, a landscape formula used for generations in so-called formal garden layouts. Its opposite is asymmetry (or occult balance) and provides us with the design term "informal". There are a large number of peat dikes in the Netherlands. The humidity level of the peat determines the sturdiness and stability of such a dike. If a peat dike is too wet, it can collapse under its own weight. In a peat dike that is too dry, there is a risk of erosion and soil compaction. If the peat dries out completely, it even becomes water resistant and does not absorb water anymore at all. 2, record 15, English, - peat%20dike

In certain circumstances it may be desirable to shape the ground to allow surface water to collect in a water storage pond on site. This concept of retaining surface water run-off by reducing the peak water impact on the storm sewer capacity and by providing an attractive site feature, may be economical on large sites. It may also be possible to use a less expensive underground sewer system with fewer or smaller diameter pipes because the peak water impact will be collected by the retention pond instead of the sewer system. 2, record 44, English, - retention%20pond

1, record 67, French, - modelage%20du%20terrain

Grading is the process of moving soil to change the form of the land. Cutting is the removal of soil and filling is the addition of soil. Shrinkage factor is the volume of soil lost after cut material is placed as fill. It is usually desirable to balance the cut and fill at a site. Exporting or importing soil is a costly operation compared to moving soil on site. The cost of moving soil at the site is about 1/6 that of importing soil and about 1/3 that of exporting soil, unless of course the export material may be sold. Another reason to avoid importing soil is to avoid complications which may result from mixing different soil types. 1, record 68, English, - balance%20the%20cut%20and%20fill
