En perception, les définitions de la figure, ou forme, et du fond sont relatives l'une à l'autre; complémentaires, elles décrivent le monde sensible. Une figure perceptive est un élément individualisé ou un ensemble cohérent qui se détache d’un arrière-plan moins différencié, plus homogène appelé fond, par analogie avec le sens de ce mot en peinture. Cette distinction spontanée, appelée ségrégation, divise l'espace ambiant en deux zones d’inégale importance; elle constitue le phénomène fondamental qui structure le monde physique des êtres vivants.
