Collapse scar fens are small peatlands that originated through subsidence of a part of a palsa fen. Melting of the permafrost in palsa fens causes the peatland surface to subside to the same level or slightly below the water table around the palsa. The collapse scars are often circular or oval in outline, usually at the edge of a palsa fen. 3, record 15, English, - collapse%20scar%20fen

Collapse scar bogs are circular or oval-shaped wet depressions in perennially frozen peatland. They originated as perennially frozen peatland and subsequently the permafrost thawed which caused the surface to subside. Surface waters are poor in dissolved minerals because they are not affected by mineral-rich waters in adjacent fens. Characteristic features are: (a) small, wet depressions on perennially frozen peatland. (b) developed entirely in peatland terrain and not in contact with mineral soils. (c) waters poor in dissolved minerals. 3, record 16, English, - collapse%20scar%20bog

3, record 16, French, - bog%20effondr%C3%A9

Intrapermafrost water is difficult to locate because it is locked with very few outlets into the permafrost. It is located in the same way that oil and gas are found, with seismic-prospecting instruments. Difficult to locate and generally sporadic, intrapermafrost water is normally too small in volume to satisfy the needs of large settlements. Subpermafrost water is the most dependable source of ground water in permafrost regions, since it never freezes and is kept fresh by the water-tight permafrost roof. Frost heaving of bedrock is a widespread process in permafrost regions which may generate forces and movements that detract from the otherwise sound foundation performance usually associated with bedrock. Depending on pre-existing fracture fabric, bedrock heave features may take the form of single ejected blocks or dome-shaped accumulations of up to several meters in diameter. ... a pore-water expulsion mechanism can be invoked to explain the origin of the forces producing large rock-heave features ... The entrapment of groundwater in a closed system creates zones where high hydrostatic pressures can be developed. This process is common in the highly cohesive, crystalline rocks of the Canadian Shield. ... rock heave features comprised of a bent discontinuous layer occur where the water-filled gap is overlain by several blocks and where the fractures dip outwards ... 1, record 54, English, - bedrock%20heave%20feature

2, record 54, French, - %C3%A9difice%20rocheux%20d%27%C3%A9jection%20g%C3%A9livale

The active layer overlies the permafrost, and comprises earth materials that thaw from the surface and refreeze each year. It forms the interface between permafrost and the atmosphere and biosphere. The thickness of the active layer influences vegetation and soil conditions, thereby influencing hunting, gathering, forestry and agriculture. Thickness, texture and moisture content of the active layer affects foundation conditions, transportation and construction. Changes in the active layer can contribute to problems of slope instability, with subsequent impact on transportation facilities and other structures.

2, record 77, French, - hydrate%20de%20gaz
