Applied to a texture of rocks in which the crystalline are too small to be distinguished with the unaided eye.

CONT

Aphanitic material may be minutely crystalline, or it may be glassy. Most lavas solidify so rapidly that coarse mineral grains cannot form; thus, volcanic rocks are mostly aphanites.

Les roches sont dites cristallines si les cristaux peuvent être distingués à l’œil nu. Dans le cas contraire, on les dit aphanitiques. [...] Les roches aphanitiques peuvent être microcristallines ou cryptocristallines suivant que les divers constituants peuvent ou non être distingués au microscope. Si la substance vitreuse est prédominante, les roches sont appelées simplement aphanitiques et, en particulier, si elles sont riches en composants acides, ce sont des felsites.

On parle aussi de la pâte aphanitique des roches éruptives, microlitiques et parfois même microgrenues.

porphyrique : Se dit de roches magmatiques contenant de grands cristaux dispersés dans une pâte microcristalline.

porphyritique :[Se dit] d’une roche ignée ayant des gros cristaux pris dans une matrice à grains moyens(texture phanéritique). À ne pas confondre une texture porphyritique avec une texture porphyrique. La seule différence entre ces deux textures se situe au niveau de la dimension des grains composant la matrice. Pour une texture porphyritique la matrice est phanéritique alors que pour une texture porphyrique la matrice est aphanitique. C'est pourquoi une texture porphyritique ne peut pas être d’origine volcanique car la grosseur moyenne des minéraux composant la matrice réflète un environnement où la température diminue plutôt lentement.
