pierre de Rosette. C'est à Rosette, en Égypte, que l'officier du génie Bouchard fit, en 1799, pendant l'occupation française, une découverte qui devait avoir une extraordinaire importance. Il s’agissait d’une stèle qui fut transportée à Alexandrie pour examen. Elle enregistrait un décret du pharaon Ptolémée V(196 av. J.-C.) en trois versions : hiéroglyphique, grecque, démotique. Rien de moins qu'un document trilingue, le grec étant une traduction de l'égyptien. On pressentit qu'on détenait peut-être la clé du déchiffrement des hiéroglyphes, mais il faudra attendre vingt-trois ans et les intuitions géniales de Champollion pour que cet espoir devienne réalité.
