Le microscope à ultraviolets utilise le rayonnement ultraviolet au lieu de la lumière visible. Les longueurs d’ondes de ce rayonnement, plus courtes que celles de la lumière visible, procurent à ce type de microscope une meilleure résolution. L'absorption sélective de la bande des rayons ultraviolets dans différentes longueurs d’ondes permet de renforcer certains détails de l'échantillon observé. Comme le verre ne laisse pas passer les ultraviolets de faible longueur d’onde, on utilise des systèmes optiques en quartz, en fluorine et des miroirs en aluminium. De plus, comme le rayonnement ultraviolet est invisible, on visualise les images par phosphorescence, par photographie ou par balayage électronique. Additifs anti-ultraviolet. Leur fonction est de protéger le matériau des rayons UV qui sont les plus énergétiques du spectre du rayonnement solaire(longueur d’onde de 0, 29 à 0, 4[ micromètre]). Ils détériorent le matériau selon plusieurs mécanismes : par rupture d’une liaison par exemple la déshydrohalogénation d’un polyester ininflammable(photodégradation) ;par induction d’une transition électronique d’un état stable fondamental à un état excité qui facilite l'oxydation(photo-oxydation) ;par transformation de l'énergie qui peut entraîner une rotation ou vibration des molécules et occasionner une augmentation de température, ou plus rarement créer des émissions secondaires d’ondes électromagnétiques(fluorescence, phosphorescence). Le principe de l'agent anti-UV est d’absorber l'énergie reçue sans réémettre dans le visible. Les principaux produits utilisés sont la benzophénone et le benzotriazol. The term used when decay times of luminescence are measured using a pulsed source of radiation. It is often necessary to separate the signal due to the light flash from luminescence emission signal by a deconvolution technique in order to obtain the correct decay curve for emission. Polymers, because of their structure, additives or structure defects, can contain what are referred to as chromophor groups, which by absorbing UV-light can increase the electronic energy level of the polymer. The polymer in this situation can readily react further, for example, with oxygen (photo-oxidation). The higher scale energy of the polymer can be transferred to the quencher by adding energy quencher.
