It was during the Renaissance that Italian embroidery was famous throughout Europe for its meticulous detail and technical proficiency. Under the patronage of the Medicis, Florence became an important centre for embroidery. Prominent artists such as Raphael, were commissioned to make designs to be stiched by such men as Antonio Pollaiuolo, whose embroideries were recognised as important examples of Renaissance art. In Venice, typical openwork evolved into lace, removing threads and replacing them with stiches. Casalguidi is known for another distinct form of white linen embroidery and in Florence expensive silk and woollen threads were worked on canvas in a technique known today as "Bargello work" after the palace there. 1, record 1, English, - Italian%20embroidery

1, record 3, French, - broderie%20d%27Appenzell

Point poste.-Point formant relief. 4, record 4, French, - point%20poste

This is a useful stitch which can be used as a filling or as an isolated stitch. It can be worked at spaced intervals or closely grouped. It consists of three vertical satin stitches which are overcast with two horizontal satin stitches, worked with the head of the needle without penetrating the fabric. (A Complete Guide to Embroidery, 1976, p. 45). 1, record 5, English, - sheaf%20stitch
