Il y a pluralité d’assurances lorsque deux assurances ou plus couvrent les mêmes biens. Il peut s’agir de polices du même genre : deux polices d’assurance incendie par exemple. On dira que ces assurances "interviennent à titre contributif" lorsque chaque assureur indemnise sa quote-part du sinistre. Mais il existe des cas où les assurances sont "cumulatives", lorsqu'il n’ y a pas de répartition de quotités déterminées, ce qui peut arriver lorsqu'il s’agit de deux genres d’assurances différents comme une assurance incendie et une assurance des biens meubles.

Situación que se plantea cuando sobre el mismo objeto existen varios seguros del mismo tipo, de tal modo que, teóricamente, si se produjera la pérdida de dicho objeto a consecuencia de un siniestro, las indemnizaciones conjuntas debidas por las distintas aseguradoras sobrepasarían el valor real del objeto y serían, por tanto, causa de lucro para el tomador del seguro.

La concurrencia de seguros es distinta del coaseguro, ya que en este último, si bien existen varios contratos sobre el mismo objeto, el importe total asegurado no sobrepasa el valor de dicho objeto.
