The world's biggest Low is caused by hot air rising near the equator (it is called the Equatorial Low). Its position moves north and south during the year as it follows the movement of the overhead sun and the latitude of greatest heating. The Equatorial Low is the heat 'engine' that powers the entire global circulation. Cloud and rain are produced by rising air, making the Equatorial Low also the world's main rain-producing area and the place of the great tropical rainforests. 2, record 6, English, - equatorial%20low

2, record 6, French, - basse%20pression%20%C3%A9quatoriale

In the expansive floodplains of the Niger River in Mali farmers have grown rice for many centuries. This peculiar "African rice", or Oryza glaberrima, evolved here before the arrival of humans. Its make-up includes genetic traits essential for survival. Its stalk grows in pace with the rising water, keeping its panicle (seed head) afloat; it can cope with dehydration stress after the waters recede; and it shatters seed when mature. 2, record 7, English, - floating%20rice

2, record 7, French, - riz%20flottant
