"Single minute exchange of die" or "SMED" is a method for rapidly and efficiently converting a process from running the current product to running the next product. It is also often referred to as "quick changeover". The SMED method can [be], and often is, used in starting up a process and rapidly getting it to running condition with minimum waste. "SMED" or "single minute exchange of die" is a concept that says all changeovers (and startups) can and should take less than 10 minutes ... hence the phrase "single minute".

Méthode mise en œuvre dans une chaîne de production qui permet, lors d’une modification ou d’un changement de l’objet fabriqué, de remplacer un outillage dans un délai aussi court que possible.

Selon le principe directeur du juste-à-temps, l'organisation de la production doit permettre une conversion rapide des chaînes de montage afin de répondre le plus efficacement possible à la demande : on parle alors de système de production flexible [...]. Ce système de production est caractérisé par des temps de changement(d’outil, de série, de produit, etc.) très courts. Il est alors question d’une méthode de mise en course rapide ou de mise en route rapide, ou encore de changement rapide d’outil, la méthode SMED(single minutes exchange of die), littéralement «changement d’outil à la minute» et dont l'objectif est de réduire le temps d’adaptation d’un poste de travail à la fabrication d’une nouvelle série.

The European Defence Community (EDC) was a treaty signed in May 1952 by France, Germany, Italy and the Benelux countries in response to the American call for the rearmament of West Germany. However, because of the failure to obtain a majority in the French Parliament, the EDC was never ratified and the initiative collapsed in August 1954.

La Communauté européenne de défense ou CED est un projet d’Organisation qui prévoyait l'institution d’une armée européenne avec des institutions supranationales. Elle est proposée sous la forme d’une armée européenne par le président du Conseil, René Pleven. La proposition est approuvée le 26 octobre 1950 à l'Assemblée nationale par 343 voix contre 225. Le traité instituant la CED est adopté par les gouvernements français, allemand(RFA), italien et du Bénélux par le traité de Paris du 27 mai 1952. En août 1954, l'Assemblée nationale française, avec l'opposition des communistes et des gaullistes, d’une partie des socialistes et des radicaux, refuse de ratifier le traité en adoptant une question préalable. La crainte du réarmement allemand a pesé lourd dans cette décision. Le gouvernement italien, lui non plus, n’ a pas ratifié le traité. L'échec de la CED gèle le processus d’unification européenne pour un temps. Une relance se dessine cependant en 1955 à la Conférence de Messine et, en 1957, les traités de Rome instituant le Marché commun(CEE) et l'Euratom sont signés.
