The concept of multiple discrimination recognizes that discrimination can occur on the basis of more than one perceived characteristic. For example, a person who is discriminated on the grounds of their ethnicity may also be discrimination on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, age, and so on. Such discrimination can, and often does, create cumulative disadvantage. 3, record 1, English, - multiple%20discrimination

High aspect ratio, or fiber-shaped, nanoparticles (HARNs), represent a growth area in nanotechnology as their useful properties become more apparent. Carbon nanotubes, the best known and studied of the HARNs, are handled on an increasingly large scale, with subsequent potential for human inhalation exposure. Their resemblance to asbestos fibers precipitated fears that they might show the same type of pathology as that caused by asbestos and there is emerging evidence to support this possibility. The large number of other HARNs, including nanorods, nanowires and other nanofibers, require similar toxicological scrutiny. In this article, we describe the unusual hazard associated with fibers, with special reference to asbestos, and address the features of fibers that dictate their pathogenicity as developed in the fiber pathogenicity paradigm. This paradigm is a robust structure-toxicity model that identifies thin, long, biopersistent fibers as the effective dose for fiber-type pathogenic effects. It is likely that HARNs will in general conform to the paradigm and such an understanding of the features that make fibers pathogenic should enable us to design safer HARNs. 3, record 3, English, - high%20aspect%20ratio%20nanoparticle

(Nanowerk News) A UK consortium of scientists, led by the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Edinburgh, has published a key report examining whether high aspect ratio nanoparticles (HARN) should raise the same concerns as asbestos fibres. HARN includes materials such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and metal nanowires. The review, which was published by DEFRA [Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs] this week, identified many similarities between HARN and asbestos with regard to their physico-chemical properties and toxicological effects, and it concluded that there is sufficient evidence to suggest that HARN, which have the same characteristics (diameter, length and biopersitance) as pathogenic fibres such as asbestos, are likely to have similar pathology. 4, record 3, English, - high%20aspect%20ratio%20nanoparticle

Recently developed techniques of organic synthesis and polymer chemistry [now permit] to synthesize catalysts having enzyme-like activities ... sometimes called " synzymes" ... It seems most likely ... that enzyme mimics (analogues) will need a large complex structure, ... as well as any portions of degraded or part-synthesized enzymes which one might hope would retain (or exhibit) particular catalytic ability. The hope derives from the finding that some complex enzymes display more than one catalytic ability, and have different domains with characteristic active sites with specificity for particular substrates and conversions.... Consideration of the development of "synzymes" leads immediately to the question of feasibility at reasonable cost in a reasonable time period. One obvious question is how faithfully must the structure of the enzyme active center be duplicated? 2, record 7, English, - synzyme

There is growing interest in synthetic catalysts that mimic enzymes. Bioorganic chemists study enzyme models with the hope that results of their investigations will aid in the understanding of enzyme mechanism.

Cribbing can be made out of pieces of timber found in the debris and cut to size. ... Cribbing involves multiple pieces of wood laid on the side and crossed. Three-dimensional (3D) seismic surveys utilise 2D grids of seismic sources and receivers deployed on the ground surface. The seismic response of the ground is recorded as a time series corresponding to each source-receiver pair, and the wave propagation time becomes the third dimension of the data set. ... If a 3D seismic survey is repeated at several time intervals, this historical time (as opposed to the wave propagation time) becomes a fourth dimension, hence the name 4D or time-lapse seismic. The 4D approach allows a detailed description of the evolution of the reservoir, but the overall cost of the survey escalates rapidly by repeating conventional 3D surveys. 4, record 28, English, - time%2Dlapse%20seismic

Macro-texture corresponds to variations in radar brightness that extend over many resolution cells. It can be, for example, field boundaries, forest shadows, roads or geologic lineaments. The structure parameter is extremely important for radar imagery interpretation, especially in geology and oceanography. It is generally assessed using edge or other pattern detection techniques. 2, record 34, English, - macro%2Dtexture

Method of production of microencapsulated enzymes based on a chemical reaction to synthesize a water-insoluble polymer at the interface of a microdroplet. The two monomers must have differing solubilities such that one is partially soluble in both the aqueous and organic phases (that is, a hydrophilic monomer) whilst the other must be soluble only in the organic phase (that is, a hydrophobic monomer. A solution of the hydrophilic monomer and enzyme is emulsified in an organic solvent, and to this emulsion is added a solution of hydrophobic monomer in the same organic solvent.

Cartridge identification system in which many different means of designation have been used so far, caused by tradition, commercialisation, and very often by the many different cartridges of the same calibre. The following designations are only a few examples: a. 44-40-220 Winchester: Bullet diameter, weight of the black powder charge and weight of the bullet in grains. b. 44-40 Winchester: Later designation of the above cartridge with the bullet weight deleted. c. 30-06 Springfield: Bullet diameter and year of adoption in service. d. 45 ACP: Bullet diameter and abbreviation for "Auto Colt Pistol". e. 22 Short, 22 Long, 22 Long Rifle, 22 Extra Long: Bullet diameter and name to identify varying cartridge case lengths. f. 220 Swift, 222 Remington, 223 Remington, 224 Weatherby, 225 Winchester: All using bullets of the same diameter (.224) but having different dimensions of cartridge cases. g. 250-3000 Savage: Bullet diameter and velocity in feet per second. h. 270 Winchester: Bore diameter. NOTE. Today, the most common American practice is to designate the cartridge by the approximate bullet diameter, which in the United States is similar in diameter to the groove diameter of the rifled barrel, and the designation till generally includes the name of the company which designed the cartridge. 1, record 62, English, - US%20cartridge%20designation

NOTE.

2, record 64, French, - jigger
