Ces rhizomes permettent à la plante de se maintenir en hiver et de progresser dans le substrat en colonisant la superficie disponible. Les rhizomes des roseaux présentent la particularité d’être creux et non asphyxiants. L'agitation des tiges aériennes par le vent va se répercuter au niveau de la partie souterraine en créant un espace libre autour des rhizomes et racines. Cet espace libre permettra la circulation de l'eau usée en période d’approvisionnement et de l'air en période de repos. L'enchevêtrement de ces rhizomes, jeunes pousses et racines, permettra de filtrer la matière organique en suspension dans l'eau usée. Cette dernière sera ensuite dégradée par des bactéries aérobies au contact de l'air en circulation dans ce réseau, pour produire des gaz carbonés naturels et inodores.
