Note that [the] correlation or association that way exist between ... random variables does not necessarily imply cause and effect relationship, but only association. ... statistical dependence by no means measures causality. A strong association or correlation may be discovered between automobile accidents, for example, and high school dropouts. 1, record 27, French, - comparaisons%20multiples

Another approach, proposed by Levin, Wieland, and Williams (1999) and Taylor(1999), consists of using a "simple monetary policy rule" (simple rule) or a number of such rules, which yield good results in several models. We define a simple rule as one that allows the monetary authority to determine a level for the short-term interest rate as a function of a small number of variables (at most three or four) observed at the point in time at which monetary policy is set. 1, record 37, English, - simple%20monetary%20policy%20rule

The physical/chemical criteria exceedence index provides a summary illustration of water quality, by combining information on frequencies and amplitudes of criteria exceedence for several variables. It is consistent with the way experts analyse and interpret data on water quality. ... The results of this index should be interpreted by comparing different values: a higher value indicates that on average certain contaminants exceed the quality criterion more often and more severely than in the case where the value of the index is lower.

A grain storage must be adequate to satisfy, at least-cost, the variable inputs and outputs. This, however, may require very high capital and running costs. Once again, optimum storage size is one that minimizes the sum of waiting costs and storage costs. Numerous factors such as number of loading points, seasonal variations (due to weather and other reasons) in arrival of shipments, and variety of grades imported must all be considered. A rate law is an algebraic expression giving the flux through a process in terms of the molecular abundances or concentrations of the molecules involved and perhaps including a number of other physical forces. Perhaps the most famous rate law in biology is the Henri-Michaelis-Menten rate law ... Ohm's law is a more widely encountered example ... Other famous linear rate laws are bulk flow, and diffusion. These and many others can be seen as special cases of the general principle that fluxes are driven by gradients in chemical potential. The simplest rate law of all is the linear, first order rate law kS which embodies the physical-chemical principle of mass action. Here k is the rate constant, and S is the concentration of the molecule that is moved or transformed by this process. 3, record 56, English, - rate%20law

In a distribution with two variates, the distribution of one of the variates when the other one is fixed. There are, for each variate, as many conditional distributions as there are values or classes for the other variate. A conditional distribution is expressed by indicating the variate to which it applies and the value or class fixed for the other variate: for example, conditional distribution of the variate Y given X = x. Conditional distributions of absolute frequencies are read directly in the rows and columns of the two-way table of frequencies. The conditional distributions of relative frequencies are obtained by dividing the numbers in each row (or column) by the total number in the relevant row (or column). The idea of a conditional distribution may be extended when the number of variates is greater than two. The conditional distributions are then the distributions of one or more variates when the other variate or variates are given. 1, record 89, English, - conditional%20distribution

4, record 91, French, - courbe

In the production of rye bread consisting either entirely or partly of rye flour, the so-called sourdough method is used. A sourdough is one that is acidified and leavened by its microorganisms and that can be perpetuated ("refreshened") by adding flour and water to provide continuous acidification and fermentation. 1, record 92, English, - sourdough%20method

In using the graphic method of rotation the main objects are to eliminate negative loadings and to describe the data by as few non-zero loadings as possible. The aims of the varimax method are somewhat similar. The factors are rotated in such a way that the new loadings tend to be either relatively large or relatively small in absolute magnitude compared with the original ones. This is accomplished (...) by maximising a certain function of the squares of the loadings, the procedure being iterative. In Kaiser's original method the factors were rotated in pairs until the loadings converged to their final values. 1, record 93, English, - Varimax%20method

1, record 93, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20Varimax
