The alpha-neutron reaction, which occurs when alpha particles emitted from plutonium-238 interact with atoms of naturally occurring oxygen, results in a high neutron emission rate from plutonium oxide, and may cause a high neutron exposure to workers. Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself (also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself (also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. Commercial reprocessing plants contain dissolvers based on one of two principles: batch operation or continuous operation using an apparatus with rotating mechanical parts. These early plutonium reactors were crude affairs with the main objective being to get the weapons material as quickly as possible. Each "pile" was a honeycomb of carved graphite blocks. Hundreds of horizontal channels ran from the front (charge face) of the reactor to the rear discharge face. Beginning in the late 1970s there were unconfirmed reports of an event in the Urals that resulted in widespread contamination of the environs. We now know that this was a chemical explosion in a high level waste storage tank in 1957. This chemical explosion resulted in 20 MCi of radioactive material thrown out from the tank and 2 MCi were dispersed downwind as a plume. This plume contaminated about 23,000 square kilometers and became known as the "Eastern Urals Radioactive Trace (EURT)". The Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is preparing to evaluate for use as fuel in a CANDU reactor a small amount of plutonium from the dismantled nuclear weapons of the United States and the Russian Federation.
