Rolling resistance is the amount of energy a tyre absorbs as it revolves and deflects. The lower the rolling resistance the less fuel is required to propel the vehicle forward. Lowering the rolling resistance, however, has traditionally meant a reduction in wet grip performance, which of course is unacceptable.

À chaque tour de roue, le pneumatique se déforme pour épouser la route. L'ensemble des efforts permettant d’accélérer, de freiner ou de prendre des virages s’appliquent dans l'aire de contact. En se déformant, le pneu absorbe les irrégularités de la chaussée. C'est parce qu'il est déformable que le pneu assure adhérence et confort. Toutefois, en se déformant, les matériaux constitutifs du pneu s’échauffent et dissipent une partie de l'énergie transmise par le moteur : c'est le phénomène de résistance au roulement.
