La différence entre les petits fonds et les grands fonds est proportionnelle au décalage des cahiers encartés. Au fur et à mesure que les cahiers sont insérés les uns dans les autres, il faut diminuer la valeur des blancs de petit fond afin d’éviter que le texte des cahiers du centre n’ arrive au bord de la coupe de façonnage côté grand fond. Ce problème s’accentue avec l'augmentation du poids du papier, le grammage. Pour palier ce décalage, on le mesure, puis on diminue d’autant les blancs de petit fond selon la position du cahier dans l'ouvrage.

Deformation of a sheet of paper which tends to roll into the form of a cylinder. The axis may be either in the machine direction, cross direction or diagonal. The paper may be curled towards the wire-like or the felt-like side.

Thus the direction of curl should be described at specific relative humidity and temperature conditions and in terms of towards wire or felt side and orientation of the curl axis. Caused by inequalities in hygroreactivity or stress levels between the two sides of the paper.
