Device that indicates the hardness of a material, usually by measuring the effect on its surface of a localized penetration by a standardized rounded or pointed indenter of diamond, carbide, or hard steel.

Plastics and related plastic insulating materials may be measured by an indentation hardness tester. Results give an indication of the extent of cure of some thermosetting materials at room temperature, and act as a control test to indicate the punching quality of laminated plastics at the processing temperature. Indentation hardness numbers relate to the area or depth of indentation made by an indenter of fixed geometry under a known static load.

When a properly designed penetrator is forced into the material under a given load, an indentation is produced and the hardness is taken to be inversely proportional to the amount of indentation.

Essai Rockwell.-Le pénétrateur est soit une bille, soit un cône de diamant(...) On mesure non pas la surface d’empreinte mais sa profondeur. Afin d’obtenir une surface de référence à partir de laquelle sera mesurée la pénétration du poinçon, on soumet celui-ci à une précharge faible(...) puis à une seconde charge(...) On mesure ensuite la distance(...) séparant les deux positions successives occupées par l'extrémité du pénétrateur. L'utilisation de la précharge permet d’éliminer les erreurs dues aux irrégularités de l'état de surface du métal.
