The Interest Relief Plan, as a component of the Canada Student Loans Program, helps full-time or part-time students who are finding it difficult to pay back their federal student loans because of low income. Under the Plan, the Government of Canada pays the interest on Canada student loans and, during this time, the student does not have to make any loan payments. Interest relief is normally approved for 3 month periods for a maximum lifetime benefit of up to 18 months and is available within the first five years of repayment for full-time students.
