The Winter Olympic Games or the Olympic Winter Games are a winter multi-sport event held every four years. The feature winter sports held on ice or snow, such as ice skating and skiing. L'idée d’organiser des Jeux Olympiques revient au comte Clary et au marquis de Polignac, tous deux représentants français au CIO [Comité International Olympique]. Ils soumettent l'idée en 1921. La question est débattue en juin 1921 à l'occasion du congrès de Lausanne, et le CIO se prononce pour l'admission des sports d’hiver à la famille olympique. Il convient de signaler que les sports d’hiver ont déja fait partie du programme olympique : épreuves de patinage artistique aux Jeux Olympiques d’été de 1908 à Londres et tournoi olympique de hockey-sur-glace en 1920 à Anvers. Après la décision du CIO en 1921, les sports d’hiver se tiendront dans un lieu propice et pas obligatoirement dans la ville désignée pour recevoir les Jeux Olympiques d’été. Les premiers Jeux Olympiques d’hiver ont eu lieu en 1924 en France à Chamonix. Jusqu'en 1992, ils se sont déroulés tous les quatre ans, la même année que les Jeux Olympiques d’été(les années bissextiles).
