Le profilographe aéroporté(PA) est un altimètre RADAR enregistreur à faisceau étroit qui détermine les profils topographiques pour la cartographie des régions éloignées. L'instrument comporte un émetteur d’impulsions de 3, 2 cm qui alimente un radiateur parabolique installé sous l'aéronef. Cette antenne dirige la radiation à la verticale, vers le bas, et la hauteur de l'aéronef est mesurée par le chronométrage électronique de l'impulsion réfléchie. Les données altimétriques apparaissent sous la forme d’un graphique continu.
