8, record 2, French, - hydroxyle

All ... amino acids ... except proline have as common denominators a free carboxyl group and a free unsubstituted amino group on the [alpha] carbon atom. They differ from each other in the structure of their distinctive side chains, called the R groups.... The characteristic organic reactions of amino acids are those of their functional groups, i.e., the carboxyl groups, the [alpha] amino groups, and the functional groups present in the different side chains.... The carboxyl groups of all amino acids undergo well-known organic reactions leading to the formation of amides, esters, and acid halides.... Esterification of amino acids with ethanol or benzyl alcohol is often used as a means of protecting the carboxyl group of amino acids in the chemical synthesis of peptides. 3, record 3, English, - carboxyl%20group

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
4, record 3, French, - carboxyle
