Le principe de la réflexion totale interne est à la base de la propagation des ondes lumineuses dans la fibre optique. D'après ce principe, lorsqu'un rayon lumineux passe d’un milieu à un autre dont l'indice de réfraction est plus faible, il peut être réfléchi. De plus, lorsque l'angle d’incidence du rayon lumineux est plus grand que l'angle critique, la lumière est réfléchie en totalité et il n’ y a aucune perte de lumière.
