Les observations météorologiques tant en surface qu'en altitude sont essentiellement discontinues; le but de l'analyse synoptique est de substituer à cette représentation discrète une description du continu atmosphérique par des méthodes objectives d’interpolation. Lorsqu'on analyse les paramètres physiques de l'atmosphère tels que la pression, la température, le vent, il est possible de faire appel à des méthodes numériques mettant en œuvre des programmes traités sur calculateur; par contre, quand il s’agit de prendre en compte des critères complexes comme les masses d’air ou les fronts, on est amené à opérer manuellement.
