Existing GIS data models are mostly based on the georelational data modeling approach. The relational data model does not support all the requirements of GISs as geographic reality cannot be captured efficiently with relational data modeling. That deficiency in capturing geographic reality imposes problems in manipulating, analyzing and processing spatial data. An object-oriented data model is more suitable as geographic entities can be represented more naturally. It will allow for a better semantic representation of spatial and attribute data in GISs. Object-oriented data modeling is also of particular importance for developing metadata and standardization in GISs. GIS software that are based on the object-oriented methodology and techniques facilitate simpler mechanisms for software interface, software modification and software extension. The workshop introduces general concepts and principles of object-oriented paradigm and practical considerations in implementing object-oriented GISs. Les modèles de données pour SIG existants sont principalement basés sur l'approche géorelationnelle de la modélisation des données. Le modèle de données relationnel ne répond pas à toutes les exigences des SIG puisque la réalité géographique ne peut être efficacement saisie par la modélisation relationnelle des données. Cette carence en matière de saisie de la réalité géographique pose des problèmes en manipulation, en analyse et en traitement des données spatiales. Un modèle de données orienté objets convient mieux parce que les entités géographiques peuvent y être représentées de manière plus naturelle. Il permet une meilleure représentation sémantique des données spatiales et des données d’attribut dans les SIG. La modélisation des données orientée objets est aussi très importante pour l'élaboration de métadonnées et la normalisation dans les SIG. Les logiciels de SIG qui sont basés sur les méthodes et les techniques orientées objets facilitent la mise en œuvre de mécanismes plus simples d’interfaçage, de modification et d’extension de logiciels. On présente dans cet atelier les notions et les principes généraux des modèles orientés objets ainsi que des considérations pratiques en matière d’implémentation de SIG orientés objets. Symposium international «La géomatique à l'ère de RADARSAT» qui eut lieu à Ottawa en 1997.

En jumelant les symboles abréviatifs des nombres et les symboles des unités monétaires, on obtient des formulations fort utiles qui se répandent et qui, par uniformisation, obtiennent l'assentiment de plus en plus de gens, d’organismes et d’entités commerciales. Ex. : 15 k$(ou kilodollars) pour 15 000 $; 15, 5 M$(ou mégadollars) pour 15 500 000 $; 15, 5 G$(ou gigadollars) pour 15 500 000 000 $; 1, 5 T[ symbole de l'euro](ou téra-euros) pour 1 500 000 000 000. Il y a grand intérêt à s’inspirer de cette façon de faire dans les en-têtes des états financiers ou des colonnes. Une formulation telle que «k$» peut en effet remplacer avantageusement la représentation à l'anglaise «000» ou des expressions comme «en milliers de dollars» d’une longueur parfois embarrassante. Les formulations ainsi abrégées ont l'avantage de permettre une économie de moyens sans devoir emprunter à l'anglais une façon de faire obscure pour le lecteur francophone.
