For working in space unattached to a spacecraft, astronauts are enabled to move independently using a Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU). This snaps onto the back of the life-support system. [...] le MMU [Manned Manoeuvering Unit] a la forme d’un «sac à dos» haut de 122, 5 cm pour 82 cm de largeur et 67 cm de profondeur. Sa masse est de 150 kg au sol. Construit en aluminium, il comporte deux batteries zinc argent [...], un poste de contrôle électronique et un système qui commande 24 petites tuyères, chacune pouvant créer une poussée de 7, 5 kg en éjectant de l'azote gazeux stocké sous 210 atmosphères dans deux réservoirs de 75 cm de haut pour 25 cm de diamètre(5, 9 kg). Grâce à deux poignées situées au bout de deux bras télescopiques, l'astronaute peut effectuer des mouvements de translation et de rotation et ainsi se déplacer dans toute les directions.
