Eid al-Adha is a significant annual Islamic observance for many Muslims in Canada. It is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice or Festival of Sacrifice as it commemorates Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son to God. Eid al-Adha is celebrated in Muslim communities throughout Canada around the 10th to the 13th days of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah (or Dhul Hijja). It is a time marked by special prayers and many Muslims gather for special prayer services. Many people also visit family and friends, exchange greetings and gifts, and make donations to the poor and needy. Eid al-Adha is also a time for forgiveness and compassion. Eid al-Adha is known as the Feast of Sacrifice because it traditionally includes the sacrifice of an animal permitted for food (eg. a lamb) as an act of thanksgiving for God’s mercy. Some of the food is donated for charitable purposes.

At-Bats (AB). A batter is charged with an at-bat when he makes an out (unless credited with a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly), or reaches base on a base hit, on a fielding error or on a fielder's choice.

A batter has an at bat every time he faces a pitcher, except in the following circumstances: He receives a base on balls (BB). He is hit by a pitch (HBP). He hits a sacrifice fly or a sacrifice hit (also known as sacrifice bunt). He is awarded first base due to interference or obstruction, usually by the catcher. The inning ends while he is still at bat (due to the third out being made by a runner caught stealing, for example). In this case, the batter will come to bat again in the next inning, though he now has no balls or strikes on him. He is replaced by another hitter before his at bat is completed (unless he is replaced with two strikes and his replacement strikes out).

A commemorative battlefield park and a monument located north of the town of Albert in Picardie, France, together designated as of national historic significance by Parks Canada on April 10, 1997, and plaqued on November 8, 1997. The site is administered by Veteran Affairs Canada. The monument, a great bronze caribou, the emblem of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, was erected to speak eloquently to the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers of that regiment at the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916. The battlefield memorial park, officially opened on June 7, 1925, was established in memory of Newfoundlanders who fell in the First World War at Beaumont-Hamel.
