Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) describes a spectrum or range of clinical conditions associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. L’expression FAS fut d’abord traduite en français par «syndrome d’alcoolisme fœtal». Le pédiatre français Dehaene, qui s’est lui aussi impliqué au niveau de la recherche sur les effets de l’alcool sur le fœtus, suggère l’appellation «syndrome d’alcoolisation fœtale», plus juste en effet : le fœtus n’est pas alcoolique mais soumis contre son gré à un processus d’alcoolisation.
