Le travail se fait sur métier, avec du fil de coton ou de soie blanc sur une fine toile blanche. Le point de chaînette a été le premier point utilisé et pratiquement le seul jusqu’au milieu du XIXème siècle. Il était souvent combiné avec de la dentelle à l’aiguille.
