DEF

Applied to oxides, salts, etc., to indicate that they do not contain water of crystallization or water of combination.

OBS

Compare with "absolute", which means "absolutely free from something." Sometimes considered as a synonym of "anhydrous" when water is concerned, as in "absolute (or 'anhydrous') alcohol."

OBS

anhydrous: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

OBS

Record 2 2011-08-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
OBS

Record 4 2001-06-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
CONT

The water can easily be removed from a hydrate just by heating strongly. You will be weighing a hydrate and heating it to remove the water (now called "anhydrous salt") and weigh it again. You can now find the percent of the anhydrous salt and the water.

CONT

The purpose of this experiment is to determine the percent of water in barium chloride-2-hydrate and in an unknown salt. A hydrate salt is one in which a fixed number of water molecules is crystallized with each anhydrous salt unit.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
CONT
