Piping is a naval method of passing orders and information. Orders using a Boatswain Call are known as pipes. The use of the Boatswain's Call can be traced back to the yerar 1248 during the days of the Crusades in England ... Today the Boatswain's Call and chain are the badge of office of the Chief Boatswain's Mate and the Boatswain's Mate.

Dans la Marine, le sifflet de manœuvrier sert à transmettre des ordres et des informations. Le fait de donner un ordre de cette façon se dit «lancer un appel». On peut retracer l'usage du sifflet de manœuvrier à l'année 1248, au temps des croisades en Angleterre. [...] Aujourd’hui, le sifflet de manœuvrier et sa chaînette sont l'insigne de la fonction de maître de manœuvre et de second maître de manœuvre.
