V-mail, short for Victory Mail, was a hybrid mail process used by the United States during the Second World War as the primary and secure method to correspond with soldiers stationed abroad. To reduce the cost of transferring an original letter through the military postal system, a V-mail letter would be censored, copied to film, and printed back to paper upon arrival at its destination. The V-mail process is based on the earlier British airgraph process. 2, record 16, English, - Victory%20Mail

The House of Commons is the custodian of an important collection of art and artifacts reflecting Canada's social and political history. Many of these works are displayed throughout Parliament, including its committee rooms. This painting, Ghosts of Vimy Ridge, is currently on loan to the new Canadian War Museum, but its permanent home is the Centre Block's historic Railway Committee Room. Portraying the flickering spirits of departed Canadian soldiers making their way toward the summit of the ridge, it was painted in 1929 by Australian artist William Longstaff and purchased by Captain John Dewar, who donated it to Parliament in 1931. 1, record 41, English, - Ghosts%20of%20Vimy%20Ridge

The Integrated Soldier System Project will provide the soldier with an integrated suite of equipment that includes weapon accessories, electronic devices, sensors, individual equipment and operational clothing. This soldier system will significantly increase soldier performance, as soldiers and low-level command centres will seamlessly share data and voice communications through a network. This capability will facilitate effective and timely interaction. As a result, soldiers will have more comprehensive situational awareness, real-time tactical information and greater synchronization of activity. 1, record 63, English, - Integrated%20Soldier%20System%20Project

1, record 63, French, - Projet%20d%27%C3%A9quipement%20int%C3%A9gr%C3%A9%20du%20soldat

Radiation sickness can be acute or chronic. [...] It may take several days or weeks to develop the chronic form of the disease. A person with chronic radiation sickness has usually been exposed to lower doses over a longer period of time. This happens in the case of radioactive fallout from a nuclear explosion or accident. It may also be caused by long-term exposure to radiation in the workplace. 4, record 64, English, - chronic%20radiation%20sickness

1, record 64, French, - syndrome%20chronique%20d%27irradiation

Ideally, a military base should have three messes: the officers' mess (known as the wardroom onboard a Navy ship), the sergeants and warrant officers' mess (chiefs and petty officers' mess in the Navy) and the junior ranks mess (master seamen and below mess in the Navy). However, in the case of smaller military bases, there might be a need to form a combined mess, or, in smaller military facilities still, the need to form an all-ranks mess, due to the insufficient number of military personnel to justify separate messes. 3, record 76, English, - combined%20mess

3, record 76, French, - mess%20commun

Men and women also bartered with their neighbours and friends for much of what they needed. John Smith of Forty Mile Creek (present day Grimsby), for example, kept an account book that documented a variety of exchanges with several neighbours. Over a period of time in 1796, Smith supplied his father-in-law with hay, beef and wheat, and in return, received five quarts of salt and six shillings cash. How farm families disposed of their produce depended a great deal on personal circumstances, needs, market prices and the degree of risk one was willing to incur in the pursuit of profit. 1, record 94, English, - quart%20of%20salt
