The House of Commons is the custodian of an important collection of art and artifacts reflecting Canada's social and political history. Many of these works are displayed throughout Parliament, including its committee rooms. This painting, Ghosts of Vimy Ridge, is currently on loan to the new Canadian War Museum, but its permanent home is the Centre Block's historic Railway Committee Room. Portraying the flickering spirits of departed Canadian soldiers making their way toward the summit of the ridge, it was painted in 1929 by Australian artist William Longstaff and purchased by Captain John Dewar, who donated it to Parliament in 1931. 1, record 3, English, - Ghosts%20of%20Vimy%20Ridge

V, ch. 42). During the Revolutionary War, General Washington's troops stuffed the deflated paper money of the day into their stockings to help protect their shins from the chilly temperatures of the winter. From this practice arose the slang expression "shinplaster" to characterize any low-value paper currency. The low-denomination merchant's notes circulating in large quantities in British North America (particularly Lower Canada) during late 1830s were dubbed "shinplasters", as were the 25-cent paper notes issued in 1870 and later. 1, record 23, English, - fractional

1, record 23, French, - billet%20de%2025%20cents
