Méthode de tenue de la comptabilité des stocks qui consiste à enregistrer les mouvements d’entrée et de sortie au fur et à mesure qu'ils se présentent et à arrêter chaque fois le nouveau solde afin d’avoir un inventaire comptable constamment à jour.

L’entité qui a un système d’inventaire permanent peut procéder à des dénombrements successifs en cours d’exercice suivant la méthode dite de l’inventaire tournant à la condition toutefois que la totalité des stocks fasse l’objet d’un dénombrement au cours de l’exercice. L’inventaire comptable découle des chiffres figurant dans les comptes ou sur des fiches, à jour à l’instant de référence. Le rapprochement des chiffres résultant, d’une part, de l’inventaire physique et, d’autre part, de l’inventaire comptable peut faire apparaître des écarts d’inventaire et conduire à des écritures visant à rétablir la concordance qui s’impose.

Ello no evita que el inventario contable sea distinto del físico o real, por errores o hurtos. Es el opuesto al inventario intermitente, en el que no se registran las salidas, que se calculan al final del ejercicio conociendo las compras y la diferencia entre los inventarios inicial y final.
